Prevailing economic conditions have made business difficult over the past year, especially for small business owners. But according to a recent survey by Verizon SuperPages.com, it appears as though these struggling businesses are turning to the Internet to increase their profitability. On average, launching a Web site results in a 41% increase in sales volume for small businesses, so it should come as no surprise that 96% of small businesses surveyed say that they plan to increase spending on Web-related projects. And among the small businesses that already have a Web site, 55% say they have recouped the cost of the site, or are already profiting from their site.

Congratulations to last week's top WebCenter Licensees:

1.) Mike Kelly
2.) Dennis Vincent

Last week, Mike Kelly outsold all of our other licensees, so we caught up with him and asked him for some advice. The first thing Mike said was that he doesn't believe in high-pressure sales; he prefers to present himself as a professional Web consultant who is there to help his prospect's business. "Put yourself in the business owner's shoes and try to figure out what they want. If you can provide them with something that will benefit them--whether it makes them money, saves them money, or streamlines their business--they will listen to what you have to say."

As for lead generation, Mike hasn't focused on one specific industry, and he also doesn't do any cold calling; he targets local businesses in his area--people he knows and does business with. He thinks that this approach is especially effective for people just starting out. Mike sees it this way: if you are giving them your business, it is reasonable to expect them to give you theirs. Anytime you walk into a business, make a point to ask about their Web site; if they don't have one, it gives you a great opportunity to talk to them about the necessity of having a presence on the Web.
